The month of February is celebrated as the month of romance, as Valentine’s Day falls on the 14th.
Starting out as a pagan celebration, the Christian church wanted to “Christianize” this celebration by placing this celebration of Lupercalia (a fertility festival) on the 14th instead of the 15th of February. It was also believed in England and France during the Middle Ages, that the mating season on the birds was February 14th. The popularity of Valentine’s Day began in the 17th century and by the 18th century, small tokens of affection and handwritten notes were exchanged between friends and lovers.
