A longtime resident and naturalized Grenadian, was born in land-locked Yorkshire, UK. She moved to the south coast of England, by the sea, before higher education. She studied Fine Art at Portsmouth Grammar School, Portsmouth College of Art and Reading University, honing drawing skills and sculpting. Early influences were the artists Anselm Kiefer and Julien Schnabel and more recently, Henry Hudson. She has exhibited in Germany and London. Visiting Grenada as a teenage art student, she was intoxicated by the raw nature and exotic heat of the Caribbean Island. Her colour palette of Turneresque Greys and blues of English seascapes, changed to vivid tropical Gauguin colors, undiluted and vibrant.
Always drawn to the hand crafted, she began sculpting textured surfaces on which to apply her oil painted realism. Then beach combing, driftwood, shells, seed pods and vine collecting began, as if trying to capture and hold the nature she was experiencing in this incredible paradise. She resisted the digital world in her art practice, believing it was gradually pulling humanity into a metaphysical state of disconnect with nature. This early philosophy has only intensified, as modern society hurtles toward AI and total meta immersion.
A mixed media artist, specializing in paper maché, she works rapidly if on canvas alone, with a loose and realistic expressionism. The sculptured reliefs are more planned; the composition is set at the sculpting phase, then the color palette pulling and pushing with the form beneath. Her small bottle sculptures began as a wish to upcycle and inspired by years of enjoying Grenada’s coastline and an urge to capture something of the grace and beauty of the dying coral reefs. Adding lighting to them creates practical use to the art and dramatic dimension to the 3D form. The sculptured paintings also evolve from day to night by adding directional lighting from varying angles.
The oldest painting exhibited in this collection was painted three and a half decades ago and the newest pieces; the paint has just dried…please enjoy this journey of hers, in the place she chose to live, Grenada.
