About the Artist
John Griffith is a Grenadian wildlife photographer and marine, wildlife, and conservation biologist whose work centers on using visual storytelling to advance environmental awareness and conservation. His photography documents the richness of biodiversity across both marine and terrestrial ecosystems, with a particular focus on the unique flora and fauna of Grenada.
With a strong foundation in field-based research, Mr Griffith combines scientific knowledge with artistic practice to communicate complex ecological issues in an accessible and compelling manner.
His work seeks not only to highlight the beauty of the natural world but also to draw attention to pressing conservation challenges and ongoing successes.
An avid birdwatcher, he maintains a keen interest in avian ecology, which continues to inform both his research and photographic pursuits. He has won awards for work in competitions such as the Epic Seas and Scenes photography Competition, where he won Best Snapshot, and the Caribbean Wildlife Photography Competition, where he earned an Honourable Mention, and lastly, he was in the final round of judging for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024 competition.

The Sweet Talker (Feathered Love)
Story: The First Part of any love story begins with a sweet whisper or a smooth line.
These are Laughing Gulls, which I presume to be a breeding pair. These birds are migratory seabirds that visit the island and congregate in our waters from April to August to mate and raise their young.

Synchronicity (Feathered Love)
Story: The Second stage of love is when you and your partner start doing everything together; even those weird hobbies or habits start to feel normal. This head movement is part of the Gulls’ mating ritual, where they would call and fling back their heads until they are doing both in unison and then food and love may or may not be shared afterwards.

In the Heat of Passion (Feathered Love)
Story: The Culmination of sweet talking and synchronicity leads to passion! This was a totally unprecedented capture. I was out with my camera, but not focused on these birds, and suddenly I heard a commotion, and I looked to my side, and I was privy to an intimate yet important part of life that I felt compelled to photograph because you don’t see this every day.

Forest Ghost
Story: The Forest Ghost, sought after by many, seen by few, but heard by all. The Grenada Dove, one of the country’s elusive national treasures, is estimated by scientists to number fewer than 200 individuals in the wild, making it critically endangered. Found only in a few dry forest areas, this dove is a symbol of hope and resilience. This photo shows the rare sighting of a Grenada on its Nest withan egg, a sight that is almost never documented.

Monkey See
Story: The Mona monkey is now an important and sought-after aspect of our tourism at Grand Etang.
Did you know that they are native and are originally from West African countries like Ghana, and were brought over during colonial times? This makes our small population one of the very few populations throughout the Caribbean! This photo was taken at Grand Etang during a moment of peace after tourists had just left after crowding the monkey to feed it.

The Garden Visitor
Story: This photo is an award-winning shot of a Bananaquit subspecies that is only found on Grenada and St. Vincent, winning an award for the Best Snapshot in the E.P.I.C Seas and Scenes photography competition in 2025. This photo depicts a Bananaquit perched on an Aloe Vera flower after stealing some nectar from it. I got the inspiration to shoot this photo after noticing the bird constantly coming back to the flower every morning. So one morning I got early set up my equipment and waited

The Name-sake Throne
Story: This photo resulted from knowing my subject and observing behaviour. Originally looking for hummingbirds, I set my camera and waited, but I noticed that the bananaquits would also come looking for nectar on the banana flowers and that just makes a perfect composition. So I waited on my lunch hour skipping food for about 2 days to nail this shot, as I was at a workshop at Belmont Estate.

No Honour Among Thieves
Story: The Thieves of the Grenadian Sky and Sea, The Magnificent Frigate Birds. These birds primarily obtain their food by scavenging or stealing it from other smaller seabirds or from each other. This Photo depicts an adult female (black head) and a juvenile (white head) fighting for fish scraps discarded by the fisherman. Being my first and only photo so far to make the finals of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2024, it holds a deep sense of pride for me.

Siesta
Story: The Green Iguana, a species native to our island, while the name states that it’s always green, that isn’t accurate. They are green as babies, and the older and larger they get, the more they lose that green colour and become a duller brownish colour. This photo was of a sleeping Iguana taking a nap and soaking up the sun on a coconut tree in my backyard one afternoon.

Just a Sip
Story: The Antillean Crested Hummingbird, the smallest species of Hummingbird on the Island, is one of three and also the most commonly seen. This photo shows a hummingbird in perfect pose, taking a sip of nectar from this banana flower. This shot took nearly 3 days to get, as I was at Belmont Estate for a workshop and used my lunch hour, and the times I arrived early to set up my tripod and sit and wait while I focused on a flower, hoping one would come to it.

Air Dried
Story: The Hudsonian Whimbrel, an odd-looking visitor to our shores. It is a medium-sized bird with a long, downcurving bill that is used to prob into the soil to find food. This photo shows a Whimbrel in a bathing session, shaking off excess water from its feathers, making for quite the dramatic photo.

The Mountain Piper
Story: Within the Grenadian Interior lives a special little frog found only on our small island of Grenada. The Grenada Piping Frog, named after its loud whistle-like call, lives in mountainous areas 300 metres and more above sea level. It is endangered and only found in Grenada. This photo was taken while assisting with frog population surveys.

Fish Flip
Story: This great white bird is a Great Egret known to hunt fish of varied sizes in different bodies of water. I found this bird hunting Tilapia in a highly trafficked area without a care in the world. I captured this shot of the fish’s final moments as it was about to go down a deadly waterslide.

The Descent
Story: The Brown Pelican, named after its juvenile stage, is a mostly migratory visitor to our shores. This photo was taken while observing a family of pelicans resting within a bay in Lance Aux Epines. The photo shows a Juvenile Pelican in mid-dive, which could be seen as a practice run to perfect its form and accuracy.

The Early Worm
Story: The Semi-palmated Plover, another visitor to our shores. These birds feed on aquatic invertebrates with precision and efficiency by disturbing the ground and pulling worms out with their beaks, as this photo shows. I was lucky enough to be present and low to the ground when this plover was pulling up its breakfast, which was one of a few worms.

Title: Making a Home
Story: Another split-second opportunity, I was walking home from shooting at another location, and I noticed this Bananaquit hop up on a small log. Looking closely, I noticed there was a twig in its mouth, meaning that a nest was being built somewhere close. I took the opportunity of the bird being in great light in the dark of the mangrove, and in a great pose, and fired off this shot. Bananaquits often create nests with entrances at the bottom, as they are very much adapted to spending time upside down.

Ducks in a Row
Story: Taken in an area that no longer exists as open to visitors and that may be ecologically changed forever, these Black Bellied Whistling Ducks gathered together to breed and bring forth new life despite an unsure future for that particular habitat.

Title: Forest Hermit
Story: Of the 3 hummingbirds on the island, the Rufous-Breasted Hermit is the most secretive despite being the largest of them all. This photo was a split-second moment where the hummingbird flew in to inspect me and my colleague, who was doing some research and perched right in front of me, for just enough time for me to take this shot and then it was gone again.

Title: Harbingers of Life
Story: These Tiny creatures hold so much of the natural world together through their ability to pollinate. This shot was taken right outside my yard, where the Honeybees love to gather nectar from our thyme plant. An interesting fact is that the taste of their honey can be influenced by the plants they gather nectar from.

Title: Mr Busy-body
Story: Always foraging, the Common Ground Dove is a cute bird that loves to look for seeds on the ground always walking around with a look on intent. This Dove is taking a stroll through a beautifully green patch of grass again looking like he is on a mission with utmost confidence and ambition.
