Laluna Resort established itself as Grenada’s premiere wellness resort five years ago with the completion of our Wellness Center. Situated on prime Caribbean beachfront area, there were those who believed that given the value of the land, it would be more cost efficient to build multiple new suites to add to to the Laluna inventory. However, being of radical mind and on a spiritual quest, Laluna’s owners Bernardo and Wendy decided instead to build a Wellness Center consisting of an open air pavilion for daily yoga classes.
A perfect addition to the laid back feel of our small, 16-suite boutique hotel, the yoga pavilion has shown to be a natural infusion to the property’s atmosphere. Launched by the children’s charitable programme REACH Grenada in December 2008, the new addition held it’s first event with Neo Moreton hosting a yoga retreat for New York patrons. Continuing on in the quest for whole wellness, our Balinese-themed Spa was completed a few months after, in February 2009.
As word has continued to spread about Laluna’s Wellness Center we have hosted numerous yoga retreats, including a YogaTeacher Training 200 hrs Certification with the help of Michelle Mauve of Clayton Yoga (Missouri). During these retreats Laluna sponsors one or two local Grenadians to complete the course for free, allowing them to take their training and experience back into their local communities; and in this way, yoga has been introduced to, and has benefitted, persons who had never even heard of the practice in Grenada.
Laluna continues to offer our guests an opportunity to try to a variety of forms of yoga; we are especially happy to include partners while on vacation at Laluna, whose busy schedules have kept them from experiencing yoga at home. Our instructors adapt to make modifications to flows and poses to suit every level of yogi, even from the greenest beginner, attending their class.
Different Styles of Yoga Offered at Laluna
Vinyasa Yoga is a form of free flowing yoga, where postures flow from one into the other, while the breath is synchronized with each movement. The classes vary poses, and are usually finished with a short relaxation at the end.
Vinyasa classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30am.
Kundalini Yoga is an ancient form of yoga that was brought to the west by Yogi Bhajan. It focuses on the 7 chakras, and is done with specific poses and breathing, which are bookeneded by an opening and closing chant and meditation.
Kundalini classes are offered Mondays and Fridays at 9:30am, and Tuesdays at 6:30pm.
Yin Yoga is yoga for the joints, not the muscle, and targets connective tissue such as ligaments and bones, especially of the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Yin yoga is suitable for all levels of students, and is the perfect compliment to the more vigorous and intense ‘Yang’ styles of yoga.
Yin classes are offered Sunday mornings at 9:30am.
Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength in your ‘core’ or center of body, without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and flat abdomen. It improves flexibility and agility, and can help alleviate back pain through a series of standing and floor exercises using a special lateral breathing technique.
Pilates classes are offered Wednesdays at 5:00pm and Saturdays at 9:00am.
Attending a Class
Laluna’s yoga classes are available to guests and non-guests of the resort. Laluna also offers private yoga classes for those interested in a more one-on-one practice. Visit our yoga page for more information.
