When talking with brides and grooms looking for the perfect location for their destination wedding, the first question we often get is “why Grenada?” If our automatic answer of “because it’s the best, of course!” doesn’t suffice, we have a list of what makes it the best, too.

The Romance & Seclusion
Grenada is truly one of the most romantic islands of the Caribbean. Unlike many of the other Caribbean islands, Grenada has avoided becoming too overrun and “touristy” and has kept true to its spirit. There are many romantic activities on the island for couples to enjoy. Some of our favorites include hiking to secluded waterfalls, picnicking on one of Grenada’s “secret” beaches (ask resort staff to point you in the right direction), and, of course, couples massages from our Balinese masseuses. For a romantic moment that can’t be beat, watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea with a glass of wine and your love by your side. We’ve been here for years, and it still takes our breath away.

The Beaches
The beaches of Grenada have been voted, year after year, as some of the best in the world. Across the island you’ll find a variety of types of beaches; from volcanic black sand, to white sand, to covered in shells or sea glass, to rocky, one could spend their entire vacation finding their favorite style of beach. The most renowned is Grand Anse beach, but for a private, romantic ceremony, we truly believe that our beach cannot be beat. Grenada was also named as one of the twenty must-visit locations in the world for 2013 by National Geographic Traveler. Grenada was given the fitting description of “Caribbean with a smile”.

The Ease of Travel
Flights to Grenada come and go regularly from the US, Canada, the UK, and around the Caribbean, and minimal documentation is needed to enter the country. All that most travelers are required to have is a passport and a return ticket. Once here, US currency is accepted as easily as our EC (Eastern Caribbean), so there is no need to worry about exchanging anything before arriving.

The Activities
There truly is something for everyone in Grenada. We’ve often heard visitors say that their favorite thing about the island is that it has so many varied landscapes; when coming to Grenada, it’s almost like a mini trip around the world. At Laluna, visitors get a taste of Bali and Italy; the landscape toward Grand Etang National Forest is often compared to that of Costa Rica; take a drive toward Gouyave and be transported to the Pacific Northwest; there are places on the Atlantic side of the ocean that could be compared to muirs. The Food
Oh, the food! Of course, Grenada’s seafood is hard to beat. The island’s fishermen bring in fresh Mahi Mahi, tuna, sailfish and more. Grenada’s rich soil is perfect for growing tropical fruit and vegetables; you’ll never taste anything better than a mango plucked fresh from the tree, still warm from the sun. Grenada is known as “the Spice Isle” for a reason; a major producer of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger, the flavors from the island pack a punch. As a developing island, many local culinary projects have sprung up, including the Grenada Goat Dairy, which produces fresh, creamy, local goat cheese. Experience Grenada Hook, Line and Sinker

With the massive, diverse population of marine life that surrounds Grenada, fishermen and women have the chance to experience some amazing opportunities for grabbing the catch of the day. Whether travelers wish to have a leisurely trip on board a slowly drifting sailboat or prefer to pursue bigger game in deeper water, the island is the ideal location for fishing.

What types of fish swim through Grenada

Depending on location and ocean depth, there are many kinds of fish that frequent the waters of Grenada. Beginners and first timers often like to go after the blackfin tuna and el dorado species that tend to be a little smaller but still impressive. Bigger catch includes massive yellowfin tuna that can reach up to 250 pounds, or the giant blue marlin that can be close to 700 pounds at full growth. The distance from shore will determine the fisherman’s catch. Offshore fish (those found in deeper waters) include blue marlin, sailfish, tuna, and mahi mahi. In-shore fish (those found closer to shore and that feed on reef marine life) include wahoo, baracuda, blackfin tuna and skipjack.

The best times to go after the larger fish is through December to June; however, the fish bite year ’round, with Mahi Mahi abundant from April to September, and Tuna and Barracuda found throughout the year. Interestingly, unlike the barracuda found in more northerly waters, the barracuda of the southern Caribbean is edible, as it is not a source of Ciguatera poisoning.

Planning your fishing excursion

There are several ways to go about a fishing adventure in Grenada. Chartered half-day or full-day excursions are the most popular options, as these allow guests to relax and stay with their line while the boat is navigated by professionals. Laluna’s Deep Sea Fishing Package allows guest to head out for a half day of sailing; this can be paired with a snorkeling excursion to maximize the time on the water.

A True Cultural Experience at the Carriacou Maroon Festival

All about thanksgiving and prayer to the source of life, production, and prosperity, maroon culture is celebrated during the Carriacou Maroon Festival April 26th – 28th. With roots in Africa, Carriacou’s maroon traditions are passed on through drumming, singing, eating of “smoke food”, and other rituals practiced in a unique way by its people.

About the festival

The three-day, three venue festival gives visitors the chance to sample traditional smoked food, enjoy performances from various Caribbean islands, and enjoy an evening of fun, games, and entertainment. Merging maroon celebration with string band music, the Carriacou Maroon Festival brings this vibrant culture to life. With the vibrations of the heavy drumming and the sweet sounds of string music, it is nearly impossible for attendees to keep from dancing.

The party starts off April 26th at the village of Six Roads, a natural home setting of maroon. This first location gives vistors to experience the rituals, drums, song and dance, as well as eat and share in the ancestral meal of “smoke food”. On the 27th, the festival moves to the historical setting of Belair Heritage Park, which is the home of Carriacou’s social and cultural activities. The day begins with presentations of a big drum nation dance, quadrille dances, Shakespeare Mas and other cultural art forms by both local and regional groups. Then, a two hour string band concert kicks off featuring bands from Carriacou, Grenada, Suriname, Venezuela and more. The final day is held at Paradise beach, where an entire evening of pure, untamed and pulsating string band music is put on. Of course the music is only half the fun of the day, the other being the cuisine; the day’s food will consists of a varied menu of tasty seafood. Performances will begin at 2pm and end at 10pm, after which an after party will be held at the Coconut Bar.

About the island

A sister island to Grenada, Carriacou is known as the Land of Reefs. Only 13 square miles and with a population of approximately 8,000 people, Carriacou is one of the most unspoilt islands in the Caribbean, if not the world. Carriacou’s locals are warm, welcoming, and willing to please. The people of Carriacou are considered keepers of ancient traditions, historic folklore, and spiritual beliefs originating in African, European and indigenously Grenadian legends.

Travel to Carriacou

Only a quick trip from mainland Grenada by either air or boat, Laluna’s Concierge Services will be happy to assist in arranging travel to Carriacou for the festival. Guests can choose between local airline SVG Air and the ferry boat Osprey, both of which make daily trips between Carriacou and Grenada with ease. Art Fabrik of Grenada: A Unique Handcrafted Souvenir

When exploring the world, many travelers choose to pick up a keepsake to remind them of their journey. From an Eifel Tower statue from Paris to an intricately carved wooden box from Bali, each unique item has a memory tied to it. Visitors to the stunning Caribbean island of Grenada often choose to support the local artisan economy and purchase a beautifully handcrafted item. Fashionable and functional, a favorite take-home keepsake is an item of batik clothing from Art Fabrik.

The artisans

The Art Fabrik artist community is made up of 45 home workers and local contractors who make clothing and accessories for men, women, and children. Local Grenadian crafters are supported in their trade by combining batik with their specialty to produce unique and interesting products. The company also employs graduates from the School for the Deaf in Grenada as members of its production staff.

The process

Art Fabrik creates their batik masterpieces in the same manner that has been used for hundreds of years. Combining recycled wax, paraffin, and beeswax in a double boiler, the artist melts the mixture down to a smooth, flowing viscosity. Keeping the wax at a consistent temperature throughout the process, the artist dips a brush or tjanting – a classing batik tool – repeatedly into the wax, painting it onto the fabric as they go. The wax is applied in beautiful patterns and designs that will resist color when the piece is dyed. Once satisfied with their design, the artist will dye the fabric. To create a colorful, mutli-dimensional piece, the process is repeated again and again, drawing on wax on re-dying until the desired effect is achieved. All work is done by hand, and no two pieces come out exactly the same way.

About the textiles

To keep the wax from melting during the dying process, Art Fabrik makes their stunning textiles using only natural fibers that can be dyed with cold water dyes. When the process is finished and it comes time to remove the wax from the fabric, the pieces are dipped in boiling water and then plunged into cold water repeatedly, melting the wax out. The wax floats to the surface of the water and is scooped off to reuse.

Caring for your new piece

Especially for the first few times it is washed, it is important to separate it out from your other clothes and wash it individually by hand. For the first few washes, it is not unusual to see some color come out in the water. After that point, it can be washed in hot or cold water with like colors without bleach.

Discovering the hidden gems throughout Grenada can be the highlight of a tropical trip. For instance, this island has a selection of secluded and relaxing hot springs, many of which are open to the public. They can be found throughout the area, especially inland through dense jungles and vegetation. With the right guide, a visit to one of these hot springs can be a thrilling adventure to add to any Grenadian itinerary.

Where to find Grenada’s hot springs

Ask around to discover where the best springs can be located. One can be found near the town of Clabony in the south just off the road. There are also some located in the northeastern part of Grenada, which can be reached by Jeep, a little hiking and a local guide. The springs have not been made into a tourist destination, so they remain pure and untouched. Because of this, it takes a little know-how and determination to reach them.
