Making Plans for Grenada’s Carnival Celebrations

A celebration that honors the amazing culture and style of the tropics, Carnival in the Caribbean is a must-attend event. Unlike some of the other islands, Grenada’s Carnival (known as “Spice Mas”) takes place during the summer, with the main event occurring the second week of August. As Spice Mas draws near and the excitement on the island grows, it’s not too late to plan your trip to experience the fun.

What to see and do

Carnival is a welcoming event suited for all types of travelers who love to immerse themselves in the local culture. During the festival, attendees can watch live music, go to a beauty queen pageant, or simply pursue the food vendors that line the streets – keep and eye out for the national dish of Oil Down. For decades, Carnival has been a way for Grenadians to celebrate our independence and show our special culture to the world through art, music, dance, and simply having a great time.

Highlights of Carnival

While there are many activities to try and events to experience, there are several mainstays that travelers will not want to miss. For instance, the opening ceremonies and welcoming of guests into Carnival City showcases the best music and talents of the island. On the evening of the second Sunday of August into the early hours of Monday morning, the eerie and mind-blowing J’Ourvert occurs; including participants with painted or oiled faces and bodies dancing and marching in the streets, J’Ouvert leads into Pageant Mas, the more colorful and traditional carnival parade of costumes and bands the following morning. During Monday Night Mas the bands parade through the evening using lights and color to make them stand out against the dusk. Tuesday finishes off the celebration with the parade of the bands, taking the revelry up to midnight.

How to attend

In order to take in the majority of Spice Mas, plan your visit to center around the dates of August 9th to August 14th. Of course, after all of the late nights and dancing, we recommend extending your stay a little longer to give yourself a chance to recoup from the fun. Laluna’s helpful staff are happy to give further guidance and arrange transportation to desired events. As locals, our Concierges are able to give the best tips on where to be – and when – to maximize your Spice Mas experience. Between activities, we recommend relaxing by the Laluna swimming pool or napping in your suite’s comfortable king-sized bed.
